Written by Jade Heatley-Pickering | Sep 2, 2025 1:57:49 PM

Theory of Knowledge (ToK) is a compulsory subject for students taking the International Baccalaureate and we are delighted to support those students with the launch of ToK on MASSOLIT!

The content is highly curriculum focused: lectures on key themes for the Extended Essay include guided learning assessment material, whilst our Knowledge Through Objects series is designed to guide learning for the ToK exhibition.

This collection covers:

  • The core theme: knowledge and the knower.
  • Optional themes: technology, language, politics, religion and indigenous societies.
  • Five Areas Of Knowledge: history, the human sciences, the arts, the natural sciences, mathematics.

This subject launches with 31 courses covering all aspects of the ToK IB Specification, these have been broken down into three different series; Key Themes, Key Ideas and Thinkers, and Knowledge and Objects.

Here are some our favourite courses:

  • Knowledge in the Arts through Objects – this course explores how artworks convey different forms of knowledge through case studies including Riefenstahl’s Triumph of the Will, Munch’s The Scream, Seurat’s The Bathers, and Cattelan’s The Comedian.
  • Cartesian Rationalism – explore Descartes’ philosophy of knowledge with Prof. John Cottingham – covering rationalism, scepticism, the method of doubt, the role of God, and key criticisms of his approach.
  • Religious Knowledge through Objects – examine Christian understandings of knowledge, the role of scripture and liturgy, and the use of prayer practices such as the Rosary and Chotki.

This collection also includes courses from other subjects across the MASSOLIT library which are relevant to the five Areas of Knowledge – you can access this bonus content using the ToK content tree.
