Case Study: Shrewsbury Colleges Group

We recently visited Shrewsbury Colleges Group, a further education college in Shropshire, to see how MASSOLIT is used day-to-day by teachers and students. Hearing directly from staff gave us a great insight into how the college is using MASSOLIT to enrich teaching, engage students, and simplify staff workload across its three campuses.

Embedded into College Culture

Amanda Hartley-Newton, who leads the Learning Resource Centre team, has helped make MASSOLIT a go-to resource across the college. MASSOLIT is right at the top of our eLearning SharePoint page,” Amanda explains. “We also use posters, induction classes, and even encourage students to download the app for easy access. The single sign-on system makes it effortless.”

What Teachers are Saying

No one sings the praises of MASSOLIT louder than Classical Civilisation Teacher, Sian Squire. “It’s absolutely invaluable,” she says. “The academics use everyday language that students can understand. The videos are short, and we get these top name speakers discussing all aspects of the A Level syllabus in our own classroom.”

For Neil Allen, Programme Lead for English and Drama, MASSOLIT serves multiple purposes—most notably as a way to reinforce learning and expose students to university-level thinking. “The fact that the lectures are delivered by academics helps to create that bridge between A Level study and undergraduate study.”

The ability to assign high-quality academic homework without increasing teacher workload has also been a major advantage. As Neil says, “It makes your life easier. You're not having to generate resources to set as homework tasks, as recap tasks, etc.”

Inspiring Students and Improving Outcomes

Students at Shrewsbury have responded to the academic integrity of MASSOLIT. As Neil explains, “It’s not just a generic resource, MASSOLIT is tied directly to exam board specifications, students can see the relevance immediately.”

Sian adds, “They [students] often like the idea that there's a different voice in the classroom. Students feel more confident in their understanding of a topic after hearing a scholar explain something in a clear, authoritative way.”

Final Thoughts

There’s no question that MASSOLIT is having a positive impact on the lives of students and teachers at Shrewsbury College. From boosting engagement and understanding, to saving teachers time and getting students excited about learning. Amanda sums it up nicely: “Any college that's not using it, if they're teaching A Level subjects, they're missing a trick.”
