Earlier this year, the MASSOLIT Classics Collection reached an exciting milestone: more than 1,000 lectures, making it one of the largest online collections of resources for teaching Classics and Ancient History.
With that in mind now seems a good time to give an update on our coverage of the set texts for GCSE and A Level Latin and Classical Greek.
We now have 100% coverage of the GCSE Latin set texts, including new courses on:
We have courses on every prose set text except Nepos' Life of Hannibal, including:
We have 100% coverage:
For students interested in Ovid's Metamorphoses more generally, we've also added two new courses on exploring the poem as a whole.
We have general courses on the Odyssey and Greek tragedy, but nothing specifically on the GCSE set texts.
We do not currently have material on Lucian's Charon. But, we've added new courses on:
We also have an existing course on Herodotus: Histories: Book 7 that students might find useful.
We have 100% coverage, with brand-new courses on:
We have 100% coverage of the set texts:
We've also produced a general introduction to Livy and – as mentioned above – two courses on Ovid's Metamorphoses.
Brand-new courses on:
The only prose set text not yet covered is Livy 2.
Brand-new courses on:
Another course on Propertius' Elegies will be online in the next couple of weeks. We haven't yet filmed anything on Ovid's Amores.
We have existing materials on Euripides' Hippolytus and plan to film something on Iliad 16 soon. A new course on Homeric poetics will be online very soon.
We have 100% coverage, including new courses on:
We have existing content on Sophocles' Oedipus Tyrannus and a brand-new course on Aristophanes' Lysistrata.
I hope this has been a useful update.
We work very hard to try and keep on top of everything, but as you can see from this blog post (if not your own experience) there are a lot of set texts and they all change every two years, so the task can feel pretty Sisyphean at times.
I'll end by saying a huge thank you to all the academics that have contributed material to the site and allowed us to cover as much as we have.
Thank you especially to Prof. David Levene* (NYU), Dr Regine May (Leeds), Prof. Llewelyn Morgan (Oxford), Prof. Costas Panayotakis (Glasgow), Prof. Alison Sharrock* (Manchester), Dr Andrew Sillett (Oxford), Dr Matthew Ward* (Cambridge), Prof. James Warren* (Cambridge) and Prof. Christopher Whitton (Cambridge) who all did multiple courses in this period.
Congratulations are due to Dr Lyndsay Coo (Bristol), Dr Andy Fear (Manchester), Dr Tristan Franklinos (Oxford), Prof. Lisa Hau (Glasgow), Prof. Joseph Howley (Columbia), Prof. Sarah Miles (Durham), Dr Christine Plastow (Open), Dr Robert Rohland (Marburg) and Dr Barney Taylor (Oxford) for earning their first MASSOLIT cap.
And a final congratulations to Prof. James Robson (Open), who holds the record for the longest period between MASSOLIT filming sessions – more than ten years!
